thom browne's second retail flagship in north america was central to the celebration this past week, as thom joined with krug champagne to welcome both new and longstanding members of the thom browne family to miami's design district neighborhood.
designed in collaboration with vicenza based ASA studio and their founding partner flavio albanese, the miami store features floor, walls, and ceiling all covered in grey subway tiles, a special design aesthetic conceived by thom to feel conceptual, and to emphasize miami’s close connection to the art world. the new flagship is located at 191 NE 40th street in miami.
when krug asked thom who he would like to celebrate and partner with for the evening, cynthia erivo immediately came to mind. the two met when he designed her custom ensemble for the 2017 metropolitan museum of art costume institute gala. “cynthia is such a strong and immensely talented individual," thom said on wednesday. "i wanted this evening to be a celebration of both her and her achievements."
erivo performed live renditions of “natural woman,” “summertime,” "let me go,” and for the grand finale, after a mid-dinner downpour, “stormy weather.”
each song was paired with krug champagnes poured throughout the evening, from krug grand cuvee 160th edition to krug rose, and the coveted krug clos du mesnil 2004.
during pre-dinner drinks, guests were able to preview thom’s first large-scale public art installation, to be unveiled to this december during art basel miami. palm tree I (2019)—a twenty-one-foot tall palm tree constructed from yellow, green, and pink seersucker, pincord, and gingham oxford—evokes the iconic and unmistakable palette of an american summer. the installation will be curated by deana haggag, the president and CEO of united states artists.
