the sharp rack-a-tack-tat of a snare pierces the crisp november air. a growing hum of excitement punctuated by the morse code pops of a coaches whistle. cheers and chants, songs and calls, a symphony conducted through a long white megaphone. tucked up against the cold in thom browne knit beanies and scarves, a kinetic crowd gathers. grey meets navy. a clash of old rivals.
it’s game day in central park.
a thanksgiving tradition. a tossing of the pigskin, played on the speckled autumn turf of the north meadow. smells of oak and earth mingle with a savory waft of chestnut, rosemary, and sage. ruby aldridge and chloe wise, scarves and thom browne pleated skirts fluttering on a brisk fall eddy, sprint along the sideline, whipping the spectators into a froth.
team navy lines up across from team grey. a coin is flipped, a whistle blown, the game begins. lil uzi vert, three steps into the pocket, pleated navy thom browne skirt and navy thom browne blazer, reaches back, hurling, a spiraling arc. beatrice domond runs an end route, dan donigan cuts inside, an all out dash by nikki ogunnaike and lucas zwirner. in a scrum of navy and grey, the hand of ella balinska reaches out, plucks a grey blur from the ether. first and ten.
