behind the scenes of the couture collection.
paris, july 2023
the fittings are underway…
an atelier of artisans…
puffs from a steam press…
afternoon sun through venetian blinds…
reflections of sun gold bullion embroidery refract through transparent beadwork. custom bells are affixed to platform heels, their bells chiming gently throughout the atelier. a preview of the show soundtrack spills in from an adjacent room.
as the collection materializes, a surreal effect takes hold. an interpretation of couture’s twin poles—tailoring and draping, structured and unstructured garments. trompe l'oeil wool suiting is skillfully embedded into voluminous tweed dresses. traditional american fabrics like seersucker and traditional french fabrics like tweed find new context through interesting proportions, intricate appliqués, and the precision of handcraft.
less than twenty-four hours until the show…
next stop—palais garnier.
